This list is respectfully dedicated to my friend Mike Robinson who sadly passed away last year. I discussed most of these albums, particularly ‘Quadrophenia’ with Mike – who I will always think of by ‘The Sea and the Sand.’
- QUADROPHENIA – The Who: Complex, creative, never less than compelling.
- PHYSICAL GRAFFITI – Led Zeppelin: No other band has ever captured their sound on record like these guys – this is the physical proof.
- THE WHITE ALBUM – The Beatles: Not the most accessible work in the Fabs canon, but no less fascinating for that.
- EXILE ON MAIN STREET – Rolling Stones: Sex, swagger and chicanery? Its all here.
- ELECTRIC LADYLAND – Jimi Hendrix: The concept of electric guitar playing taken to a whole new level. The songs are pretty astonishing as well.
- MANASSAS – Stephen Stills: Rock, country and blues combine in a potent mix at a time when Stills was a force to be reckoned with.
- SONGS IN THE KEY OF LIFE – Stevie Wonder: Lyrically profound, musically innovative, culturally significant.
- BLONDE ON BLONDE – Bob Dylan: The entire notion of the ‘rock’ record and whole aspect of song writing changes direction in the space of 73 minutes.
- LONDON CALLING – The Clash: Due to its 1980 US release was declared the best album of that decade – no argument from SAMTIMONIOUS.com on that score.
- TOMMY – The Who: The Who popularise the term ‘rock opera.’ For that do we condemn or compliment of Pete Townshend?
