IT’S ONLY ROCK’N’ ROLL (1974) – the Stones offer a mixed bag of peaks, troughs, some superlative moments and others when self-parody feels dangerously close.
Dismissed at the time as the first non-essential Stones release of the ’70s, ‘GOATS HEAD SOUP’ (1973) is still funky, fascinating and delightfully facetious.
The lyrical imagery is delivered amongst country, blues, funk and rock, but for all its variations Sticky Fingers never sounds in danger of losing its grip.
